The National Yiddish Theater Folksbiene presents ESN, Songs From The Kitchen – Hanukkah Edition!

The National Yiddish Theater Folksbiene (NYTF) is offering exciting new Hanukkah programming today as part of its groundbreaking 107th season. ESN, a celebration of Jewish cuisine through song and cooking demonstrations, arrives on the NYTF virtual stage on November 28, 2021. The event is free to stream and will be available on the NYTF website at nytf .org / esn until Monday, December 6 – the last night of Chanukah.

ESN’s special Hanukkah edition will be performed by Grammy Award-winning Klezmatics’ Frank London and Lorin Sklamberg and Yiddish singer / songwriter Sarah Mina Gordon.

Gordon’s mother, Yiddish diva Adrienne Cooper (1946-2011), helped design ESN’s original performance two decades ago.

ESN is co-directed and edited by Stephanie Lynne Mason and Adam B. Shapiro. Merete Muenter serves as videographer.

Frank London is a Grammy Award-winning, New York-based trumpeter, composer, known as the “legendary high priest of Avant-Klez jazz.” In 1986, he co-founded The Klezmatics, a world-renowned Yiddish world music group that integrates militant politics and Jewish spirituality with various musical influences and contemporary themes.

Throughout his prolific career, London has performed and recorded with countless artists including Pink Floyd, Itzhak Perlman, Celia Cruz, Lester Bowie and LL Cool J. He has composed numerous scores for dance, theater and film. , including the Cuban-Yiddish opera Hatuey Memory of Feu; the symphonic oratorio 1001 voices – A symphony for a new America; the folk opera A Night in the Old Marketplace; Davenen for the Pilobolus Dance Theater; and Romance by Min Tanaka.

His current projects include Ghetto Songs; the poetry-dance collaboration Salomé: Woman of value; and Ich Bin Eine Hexe / I Am A Witch, the dance-drama biography of Weimar-era grotesque dancer Valeska Gert. Frank is present on more than 500 recordings. He graduated in African-American music from the New England Conservatory.

Sarah Mina Gordon is a fourth generation Yiddish singer. She has led the rock band Yiddish Princess and has recorded and performed with Daniel Kahn, Frank London’s Klezmer Brass Allstars, The Klezmatics, Sharabi and others. The daughter of legendary Yiddish singer Adrienne Cooper, Sarah grew up immersed in innovative Yiddish culture and collaborated with Michael Winograd, Frank London, Alicia Svigals and The Klezmatics to write original Yiddish songs that are sung around the world. Sarah is also an educator, third grade teacher, and designing and leading Yiddish language programs for children and adults. She is one of the founding organizers of Yiddish New York and teaches Yiddish song at KlezKanada.

Lorin Sklamberg is a founding member of The Klezmatics. He also teaches Yiddish chant from São Paulo to Saint Petersburg. Her current project focuses on Yiddish cabaret songs recently discovered in Helsinki, performed with Berlin-based Latvian singer Sasha Lurje, theremin pianist / player Rob Schwimmer and music director / clarinetist Michael Winograd.

Her other recent work includes 150 Voices, a recorded collaboration between Lorin, Yiddish-Russian singer / pianist / composer Polina Shepherd, and members of five choirs in the UK and US. Since 2000, Lorin has been the Sound Archivist of the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, for which he co-organizes the Ruth Rubin Legacy website featuring field recordings from the famous folklorist’s collection of some 3,000 folk songs. Yiddish. Robert Christgau of NPR’s All Things Considered called Lorin “one of America’s best singers of any genre.”
