The Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège has officially announced that Speranza Scappucci will not renew her mandate as musical director of the house, which will expire at the end of the 2021-22 season.
According to an official statement, Scappucci declined the offer made by ORW CEO Stefano Pace to extend his tenure as Music Director due to many upcoming engagements. The opera reiterated that Scappucci will return as guest conductor during the 2022-2023 season for a major new production which will be announced in due course.
The news of the end of Scappucci’s tenure follows recent developments at the Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège, when tenors Maxime Melnik and Zeno Popescu were withdrawn from the production of “Lucia di Lammermoor” due to the alleged failure to act. maintain the highest artistic standards necessary for the success of a production.
Scappucci addressed Facebook with the following statement: “A few weeks ago, I had to communicate to the Liège theater that I will not be able to renew my contract as musical director of the House: my very busy schedule, even more burdened by the canceled covid-related productions around the world that have been postponed to the next two years, do not allow me to perform the functions that such leadership confers and that I take very seriously.
I will be back as guest conductor as I love and cherish this theater very much. We will have spent 5 years together and done great things and for that I want to thank everyone at ORW, the whole house, the orchestra, the coro, each department and the Management. I look forward to the concert of Wagner Strauss in January and Simon Boccanegra in June and in the meantime I wish all the best to my fellow artists and fellow artists who will come to Liège in the coming weeks.
Scappucci withdrew from production of “Lucia di Lammermoor” in early November due to an operation. The musical director of the Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège is due back on stage for a concert of Rossini’s “Count Ory” at the Bayerischen Rundfunks on December 12, 2021.
