Pacific Opera Project will present “I Can’t Breathe”

The Pacific Opera Project in California will present the West Coast premiere of “I Can’t Breathe,” a new opera by Leslie Burrs to a libretto by Brandon J. Gibson.

The work will be presented at the El Portal Theater in North Hollywood on May 13, 14 and 15, 2022. Artistic director Joshua Shaw will direct the production under the direction of Joshua Foy.

The opera was inspired and written following repeated examples of deadly police brutality against African Americans and tells the stories of six people from different walks of life in the form of a series of six separate monodramas to tell the story. story of each character. The work is a co-production between the Marble City Opera, the Cleveland Opera Theater and the Opera Columbus. It is scheduled for its world premiere in February 2022 at the Marble City Opera.
