NEW ULM – Eleven talented performers gave it their all during Friday night’s New Ulm Sings competition at the State Street Theatre.

The performers sang everything from operatic arias to classic performance tunes. The competition was held in two age categories, 13-20 and 21+, with judges Jenny Haugen and Eric Harstad ultimately choosing the top winners in each category.

In the 13-20 age division, Lilianna Rindal of Lilydale, Minnesota took second place for her performance of “Rise up” by Andra Day.

Audrey Beranek of Lafayette won first place for her performance of “I will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor.

In the 21+ category, Bethany Derrickson of Sleepy Eye took second place for her portrayal of “Der Holle Rache Kocht In Meinem Herzen” (Queen of the Night) by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Michael J. Koester won first place for his performance of “Corner of Heaven” of the musical “Pippin apple.”

The four winners will move on to the statewide singing competition called Minnesota Sings, which will also be held at the State Street Theater.

Minnesota Sings coordinator Chuck Spavin praised the regional New Ulm Sings competition and was thrilled to report that the Minnesota Sings Finals would feature over 53 singers.

The competition will take place over two days on October 1 and 2 at the State Street Theatre.
